Health Ministry Addresses Concerns At Vieux Fort Wellness Centre

In response to the recent closure of the Vieux Fort Wellness Center for immediate rehabilitation work, a team from the Ministry of Health, Wellness and Elderly Affairs conducted a site visit on Monday to assess the situation and continue restoring the facility to full operation.

The team focused on safety and comfort when evaluating the facility’s condition, ensuring comprehensive plans were in place to manage the rehabilitation process effectively.

In a recent update, Minister of Health  Moses Jn. Baptiste provided key insights into the progress of the rehabilitation project, which aims to restore the Vieux Fort Wellness Center.

He stated, “The conditions there had to be dealt with. We know the staff members were very concerned about, number one, the air quality and also the drainage. We know that there were some issues with the drainage. We know there were some issues with the roof and some issues with the ceiling.”

He noted that many of the issues there are being addressed.

As a result, the Minister hopes that conditions will be much better at the Vieux Fort Wellness Center very soon.

Following the recent visit, Acting Chief Environmental Health Officer Cheryl Eugene provided an account of the current situation at the facility.

She explained, “What we notice is there are no signs of visible water inclusion. However, when we look at the dumping system, we realise that the flow because of the gradient at which it is placed, it causes a level of blockage. So even what happens after condensation, dust, accumulation of dust and so on, it deteriorates, and it bursts open [and] causes mold.”

Minister John Baptiste emphasised the critical need to maintain wellness centers across Saint Lucia continuously.

He remarked that many wellness centers throughout Saint Lucia require rehabilitation.

In this regard, Jn Baptiste said the Ministry of Health had created a new maintenance unit and a unit that will continue to do assessments throughout Saint Lucia.

  1. The only minister I can say who is a “square peg in a round hole” is Musa. This guy is really clueless and should have never been given such a ministry. He clearly lacks the competence to hold this ministry. And to set the record straight, I am not a supporter of the UWP, just a st lucian with an opinion.

  2. Complete the construction of the ‘Modern Hospital’ & in a modern Hospital, none of these unhealthy incidents would happen. JAN BA stop playing politics with the haters of UWP; this should not be between Political Parties, this should & must be for the people of the South.
