Starting this month, Complaints and Investigation Officers within the Consumer Affairs Department of the Ministry of Commerce, Manufacturing, Business Development, Cooperatives, and Consumer Affairs will be easier to identify, thanks to the introduction of neon-green, high-visibility suspenders.
The suspenders, emblazoned with the Department’s wordmark, aim to promote greater transparency, enhance public trust, and improve officer safety during compliance and monitoring duties across the island.
According to the Ministry of Commerce, by making authorised officers more recognisable, the initiative shows the Department’s dedication to ensuring consumer protection and welfare.
Chief Complaints and Investigation Officer, Mrs. Lyra Thomas-Joseph, explained the importance of the move, nothing that, “We have always endeavoured to serve the public, consumers in particular, with integrity and impartiality. She said the suspenders represent a commitment to retaining public trust and confidence as the Department carries out its investigations.”
The Complaints and Investigation Unit, a central pillar of the Consumer Affairs Department, is tasked with handling consumer complaints, monitoring prices, and conducting research and reporting for policy development.
Officers play a critical role in receiving, assessing, and investigating consumer grievances, conducting shop surveys, approving price calculation sheets, and preparing reports. They also engage in consumer-related research to support informed policy initiatives.
The Unit is led by the Chief Complaints and Investigation Officer, who will be supervising its activities to ensure the Department fulfills its mandate of protecting consumer rights and fostering public trust.
