“I Couldn’t Go In” – Brother of Victim in Castries/Dennery Highway Accident Left Heartbroken

Gabriel Prosper, the brother of Vincent Victor who died in a road accident along the Castries/Dennery Highway last Tuesday, is struggling to cope with the loss of his sibling.

In an emotional interview with St. Lucia Times, Prosper shared how he learned about the death of his “last brother” while at the funeral of another relative.

“I went to the funeral of my grand-aunt. While at the funeral, a young gentleman came from down the road and met me at the funeral and he said my brother was in an accident and in critical condition, go and see if he is dead. When I reached at the hospital, I couldn’t go in,” he said.

Victor, alias ‘3D’, was one of five occupants of a dump truck that veered off the road and crashed on the highway around 2:15 p.m. last Tuesday. He was the only fatality.

A fisherman from the La Pointe, Dennery community, Victor was widely known for his selflessness and willingness to help others, especially fellow fishermen. Prosper fondly recalled how his brother would always drop everything to assist those in need.

“Vincent was a good person to everybody, especially the fishermen. When the boat engine would die out at a distance, he would go out to help, no matter what time in the night. Just call him, he would be there on time to go and get the boat,” Prosper said.

Beyond his acts of kindness, Victor was also known for his love of children. “Jonathan was such a good guy. He was a loving guy, loving to all children; he would buy things for them,” said Prosper.

The family has been overwhelmed with grief, and community members have come forward to offer their condolences. In the wake of his brother’s passing, Prosper issued a plea for road safety: “Always be careful…. I’m warning and cautioning the people on the outside to be careful with vehicles that you go on and if the driver is driving careless, call upon him to stop.”
