Past and present distinguished officers of the Saint Lucia Cadet Corps were honoured last Friday when the para-military youth organisation culminated its 95th-anniversary festivities with a commemorative cocktail reception at Government House.
The reception was the grand finale of a year-long series of events that highlighted the Corps’ ongoing commitment to service, leadership, and discipline.
Among the honorees who were recognised for their invaluable contributions were past commanding officers Major Curtis Glace (1995-2001) and Captain Linwal James (1970-1973), who, alongside other serving officers, received the 95th Anniversary Commemorative Medal. The medals symbolise their decades of dedication to developing youth leadership and fostering community spirit in Saint Lucia.
The ceremony was attended by several notable figures, including Acting Governor General Cyril E.M. Charles, Governor General Emeritus Dame Pearlette Louisy, Minister of Education Shawn Edward, Senior Minister Stephenson King, and members of the Diplomatic Corps, as well as government officials, school principals, and special guests.
In his remarks, Education Minister Shawn Edward lauded the Cadet Corps for shaping the moral and ethical framework of Saint Lucia’s youth.
“The Saint Lucia Cadet Corps has not only provided military training but has also instilled discipline, patriotism, and a sense of responsibility in our young people. This milestone is a testament to its invaluable impact,” he stated.
Reflecting on the Corps’ journey, Major Curtis Glace expressed his gratitude, saying, “It is an honour to have served in an organisation that has contributed so much to nation-building. These 95 years are a celebration of resilience, hard work, and the spirit of service.”
Earlier in the year, the Saint Lucia Cadet Corps held a major parade in July to mark the anniversary. The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Taiwan’s Ambassador to Saint Lucia, Peter Chen, Acting Governor General Charles, and Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre, along with various Cabinet ministers.
Established in 1929, the Saint Lucia Cadet Corps is recognised by the Government of Saint Lucia through the Ministry of Education. The organisation plays a significant role in military training and community service.
