USA-based defender Racquel John closed out the 2024-25 Saint Lucia Football Association (SLFA) Senior Women’s District Championships with two goals to guide Canaries to the title.
On Saturday at the Phillip Marcellin Ground in Vieux Fort, Canaries defeated Central Castries 3-0 to lift this year’s title.
A student-athlete at Central Christian College of Kansas, the 20-year-old John, usually a defender for the national team, continued to showcase her goal-scoring prowess.
One of five national players in the Canaries team, John’s strikes in the 38th and 79th minutes bookended a marker from Ankia Merdor in the 67th minute.
The champions not only lifted the trophy and the gold medals but earned themselves $6 000. Central Castries were awarded $3 000 in addition to their silver medals and trophy.
Defending champions Vieux Fort South, upset by Central Castries in the semifinals, held on to beat Desruisseaux 1-0 thanks to a goal from former Under-20 international Jerdel Emery in the 60th minute.
Vieux Fort South copped the third-place trophy and bronze medals.

It looks like St Lucian women’s football is on the rise. Well done and congratulations to the Canaries ladies football team. I was not aware of women’s football in St Lucia. I watched Haiti and Jamaica represent the Caribbean recently in the female World Cup and it was a delight to watch our Caribbean women do battle where barring a dodgy penalty Haiti was beaten by England by One nil. Haiti outplayed England and it was a joy to see.
I would love to see St Lucia featured in the next World Cup. It looks like the Canaries ladies have acquitted themselves well and held their own. I would like to personally congratulate them as my family comes from Canaries and some of these women could be related to me. My parents are from Canaries. We need a strong St Lucian team who can go all the way and to be featured in the upcoming World Cup.
Canaries have always played well in football. The men’s team won the national championships a little while ago. When I visited Canaries back the the 80s they had players like Viator Do Merry, Clifford, Alcide, just to name a few. Do Merry was such a robust central defender who was often ignored by the powers that be in the Lucian FA. He played so well and it was a joy to watch him play. He should have played for St Lucia. Where is he now and the squad of 86 who beat Central Castries 3 -2? I watched that encounter between Canaries and Central Castries which was thrilling… Castries was beaten
by Canaries in Canaries.
I would like to see St Lucian football go forward where both the men’s and women’s teams are featured in the FIFA World Cups. Common St Lucia please make it happen.
