Saint Lucia opened the 2025 Windward Islands Cricket Board (WICB) Senior Women’s Tournament with a devastating loss to Grenada, on Sunday at the Geneva Playing Field in Dominica. The defending champions lost by four wickets.
Double crown champions in 2024, the Saint Lucians got their 50-over defence underway on a sticky pitch on day one of the competition. Batting first, they were skittled out for 65 runs, without a single player getting into double figures, and in the face of some tough officiating calls. Nerissa Crafton, with nine runs, was the top scorer.
For Grenada, Carena Noel was outstanding. The 30-year-old took four wickets with her off breaks. West Indies player Afy Fletcher captured two wickets with her leg breaks to leave the Saint Lucian ladies at sea. The first innings lasted just 22.5 overs.
Fletcher and Noel also led with the bat, scoring 15 and 13, respectively. Fletcher survived what looked like a good shout for leg before wicket on the first ball from Gros Islet’s Niesha Cherry. Cherry, 19 years old, took 4-25 from her nine overs, keeping Saint Lucia in the hunt. Captain Zaida James added 1-12 from three overs. A handful of dropped catches also proved costly, even with a small total on the board.
Saint Lucia will have a quick turnaround. They play St Vincent and the Grenadines on Monday at the same venue.
In the other match on Sunday, played at Benjamin’s Park, St Vincent and the Grenadines beat Dominica by two wickets.
