“Glory Be to God”: Swahili Francis Heads to Martinique for Treatment

Six-year-old Swahili Francis, whose fight against acute kidney failure has touched hearts across Saint Lucia, is off to Martinique for further diagnosis and treatment. His mother, Cristy Francis, shared an update on his condition, expressing deep gratitude for the overwhelming public support that has helped make the trip possible.

Last month, St Lucia Times reported on the Francis family’s plea for assistance after Swahili was hospitalised in critical condition. His health crisis began on Christmas night with flu-like symptoms, including fever and coughing. His condition rapidly deteriorated, leading to his admission to St Jude Hospital on December 30. Doctors diagnosed him with acute kidney failure caused by low electrolyte levels due to persistent vomiting, which placed excessive strain on his kidneys.

Now, weeks later, Cristy is relieved to report that Swahili has made tremendous progress. Speaking to St Lucia Times, she recalled how he went from being unable to walk, talk, or eat, to regaining his strength.

“Honestly, from the condition he started in, he couldn’t walk, he couldn’t talk, and he wasn’t eating. Now, he’s stronger. His progress has truly surprised me,” Cristy shared. “I just continue to pray that everything will be okay.”

The mother and son departed for Martinique on Wednesday, in search of definitive answers and advanced medical care. While doctors at St Jude Hospital confirmed kidney failure in both of Swahili’s kidneys, the exact cause remains unknown.

“They were very close to a diagnosis at St Jude,” Cristy explained. “But we don’t know what caused it, and we don’t have the necessary equipment here in Saint Lucia. Hopefully, when we get to Martinique, we’ll know for sure and know the treatment he needs.”

The family’s financial burden has been eased thanks to generous contributions from well-wishers through a GoFundMe campaign. Cristy expressed immense gratitude, noting that medical expenses in Saint Lucia alone had reached nearly $5 000 for three weeks of care.

“Every cent has helped tremendously,” she said. “I don’t know exactly what the costs will be in Martinique because things can change, but every bit of support – from the GoFundMe to people just simply sharing our story – has made a huge difference.”

As the interview with St Lucia Times concluded, Cristy extended heartfelt thanks to everyone who supported Swahili’s journey.

“I want to say ‘thank you’ to everyone, especially for the prayers. Honestly, I think the prayers are what helped the most,” he said. “We are deeply grateful for all the support—whether through donations, prayers or even just sharing our story. It means the world to my family and me.”
