Pierre Pledges Continued Progress For Saint Lucia Amid Independence Observances

In a heartfelt address at the Sab, Vigie, on February 22, Prime Minister Phillip J. Pierre reaffirmed his government’s commitment to advancing the nation’s social, cultural, and economic development as Saint Lucia celebrated its 46th anniversary of independence.

“My government and I pledge to work with you in that journey of love of country and love for self,” he said, noting that since gaining independence in 1979, the “journey has enabled us to shape our policies, develop our economy, and advocate for our national interests on the world stage.”

Pierre emphasised the importance of unity and resilience, stating that the true measure of a nation’s prosperity lies not only in economic growth but in the well-being of its people.

“This year’s theme, ‘Forward Together: Health and Well-being for a Prosperous Nation,’ is a call to action for all of us,” he said. “True prosperity is not measured only by economic gains, but by the well-being of a nation.”

The Prime Minister recognised healthcare’s critical role in Saint Lucia’s future.

In this regard, he called on all citizens to take personal responsibility for their health by engaging in physical activities, adopting proper nutrition, and reducing stress.

“My government continues to invest in healthcare, and we are committed to fostering a nationwide culture of health consciousness,” Pierre added.

He did not shy away from addressing the growing concerns surrounding alcohol and drug abuse, which have become a significant challenge for the nation. “We must take action and take it now,” Pierre declared. “This fight against alcohol and drug abuse requires action by all of society.”

Pierre highlighted the government’s multi-faceted approach to tackling the crisis, stressing the importance of stronger policies, prevention, treatment, and community involvement. “I call upon parents, teachers, religious leaders, healthcare professionals, and law enforcement officers to work together,” he urged.

Acknowledging Saint Lucia’s continuous growth in tourism, sports, and global recognition, Pierre also reflected on the nation’s rising prominence, citing local heroes such as Daren Sammy, Leverne Spencer, and Julien Alfred, who continue to inspire the youth. “We have much to celebrate, but we also have much to achieve,” he remarked.

  1. Yea continue begging the criminals to stop the crime, and to the reckless drivers to drive carefully. That is exactly the type of PM that we need right now.
