Three Gold Medals for Saint Lucia in Martinique Boxing

Five Saint Lucian boxers took part in the first-ever Caribbean Golden Glove Championships, hosted by Move and Box Academy in Martinique over the weekend. The team, coached by Conrad Francis and Arthur Langelier, returned with seven medals, including three gold medals.

Earning wins between Friday and Saturday, Saint Lucia’s Independence Day, were team captain Kyghan Mortley by a first-round knockout, and Danaii Cooman from the Vieux Fort gym by way of a split decision, both against opponents from Martinique. John Didier was also a winner, via a technical knockout, against a fighter from Guadeloupe. Taking silver medals at the Institut Martiniquais du Sport were Kyle Marcel and Orlando Monrose.

St Lucia Times was unable to get the details of the opponents and weight classes from the Saint Lucia Boxing Association.

The inaugural Caribbean Golden Glove brought together boxers from seven nations and territories – Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Canada, France, Guadeloupe, hosts Martinique, and Saint Lucia. This event at the Lamentin venue was designed as a springboard for local licensees, allowing them to perform and measure themselves against the international elite.

For the Saint Lucians, it was preparation for this weekend’s AMBC Caribbean Boxing Championships, February 28th-March 2nd at the Beausejour Gymnasium.
