The veteran police officer charged in connection with the disappearance of an M16 rifle has been remanded to the Bordelais Correctional Facility.
The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) said in a statement that Sergeant Ricardo Jerson Charlemagne applied for bail before the First District Court on Tuesday but was denied.
Charlemagne was charged with theft on Monday, just over a week after the M16 rifle went missing from the Gros Islet Police Station armoury on February 15.
In announcing the charge on Tuesday, Superintendent Luke Defreitas, who heads the Central Division, sought to reassure the public that despite Charlemagne’s arrest, the RSLPF remains committed to integrity and justice.
While acknowledging the seriousness of the case, he urged citizens not to lose faith in law enforcement, stating that the actions of one officer do not define the entire force.
Defreitas also warned that corruption and misconduct would not be tolerated and promised transparency as the case unfolds.

Mr. Defreitas,if corruption and misconduct will not be tolerated please explain this:
1. Why do the criminals know who reported them BEFORE one leaves the police station 2. Why do police use their position to intimidate people in their PERSONAL lives. Police officers jealous over their partners moving on are using their job title to harass and stalk the new love interest.
3. Explain the missing police reports, refusal to make reports , no answering of phones
Oh wow…a a …lost for words!!!
I hope alot of info now become public
Extremely depressing, couldn’t have come at a worse time, what with all the gun violence already so prevalent in Saint Lucia. The number one priority of the RSLPF is to locate the missing rifle, even if it means the relevant body offering the officer a plea deal or whatever, just so he can retrieve it. Even if the officer gets away free, that would be preferable than having an M16 rifle out there in the hands of murderous criminals. But it really is disappointing to see a police officer charged with such a serious offense.
I stopped commenting here to disassociate myself with the negativity. But this could not pass so easily. First, why hasn’t the weapon been recovered. The officer should be made to give up the connections and whereabouts of this weapon, otherwise we are all in danger. Secondly I am glad we can see who did this, but don’t we publish all such perpetrators for us to know who they are as well as to shame them. Then finally why aren’t we denying bail to all gun related violators. This situation is really ridiculous.
Our leaders are clueless. If it is not beggeerring or making some excuses which only shows that they at a loss. It is because it is happening everywhere and that there sheep drink it.
So leme understand this…..violent criminal faces are not disclosed or shared with the public but this one is blasted all over!! Crime is crime show the faces of all criminals even if they are suspects….this is how you reduce crime!
Our big man like u
Dismiss matter . Where is the gun .
The RSLPF has already been defined by the actions of many other police officers who has and continue to fail citizens. Officer Charlemagne is one of the unfortunate ones to face consequences for his alledge action. Who has been arrested and charged for cases like Kimberly De Leon, Shakadan Daniel,Arnold and others? Were they protected and has justice been served?
I would like to congratulate the officials for not sweeping the matter under the rug. Never mind the negative statements that’s being written. BRAVO TO ALL WHO’S MAKING SURE THAT IT DOES’NT HAPPEN AGAIN! The next police person will think twice next time. BRAVO AGAIN!
