Alphonse to Ride in Martinique this Weekend

One of Saint Lucia’s most exciting cyclists, teenager Denver Alphonse, is riding this weekend in the Grand Prix Mille Éco Shop.

Turning 18 this year, the Entrepot Secondary School student will be taking part in a 7.2-kilometre time trial on Saturday and a 132.8-kilometre road race on Sunday. He will be managed by Alex Noreskal of Karaibe Culture Sport.

Alphonse finished sixth in his last outing in Martinique three weeks ago, his first ride for the season. A youngster who says he dreams of competing in prestigious events like the Tour de France, he represented Saint Lucia at the Caribbean Cycling Championships last year.

Organised by Jeunesse Cycliste 231 (JC 231) under the auspices of the French Cycling Federation, the fourth edition of the Grand Prix Mille Éco Shop will be contested at Robert, the home of JC 231, with over 100 riders registered. There will be 14 athletes competing in the Under-19 division.

The weekend competition will also include the Under-15, Under-17, Open, Elite, and Women’s divisions.

On Saturday, cyclists will gather at 1 p.m. at Place Christian Marajo before starting the time trial at 2 p.m. Sunday’s racing gets underway at 8 a.m. with the U19, Open, and Elite categories.

The four-lap race will traverse Place Christian Marajo, François, Lamentin, Robert, and Mack 2 Mercy.
