UWP Calls for Election Readiness, Predicts August Poll Date

The first deputy political leader of the United Workers Party (UWP), Guy Joseph, is claiming that August 18, 2025 is the date set for the next general election.

During a Sunday livestream from the UWP Secretariat, Joseph, a former Minister of Economic Development, made the bold assertion, his speech punctuated by a member of the audience ringing a bell.

“A gentleman is ringing the bell, you know why? Because the election date is the 18th of August, 2025!” he declared.

Addressing Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre directly, Joseph challenged him to call the election even earlier than that date. The next polls are constitutionally due by July 2026.

“You can go back and revise the date if you want but I am telling you, the election date that they agreed to is the 18th of August, 2025. Ek Philip, si ou sé nonm, kwiyé’y avan sa! [Philip, if you are a man, call it before that!] We are ready! The United Workers Party is ready to rescue Saint Lucia from the hands of this incompetent government!” he charged.

Earlier in the evening, UWP leader and Opposition Leader Allen Chastanet also touched on the uncertainty surrounding the election date.

“We can feel that elections are in the air,” Chastanet said. “But I keep saying to you all, people ask ‘when is the date going to be?’ and I tell you, I cannot tell you the date because the Labour Party themselves don’t know when they’re going to call the election.”

He urged supporters to get ready for an election at any moment.

“We must prepare ourselves and get to the point where we have to let the Labour Party know when the elections need to be called,” Chastanet added.

The livestream also saw UWP candidates discussing issues affecting key constituencies, including Laborie/Augier, Castries Central, Castries East, Soufrière/Fond St Jacques, and Anse La Raye.

Chastanet spoke at length about concerns over Saint Lucia’s reported inclusion on a US list of countries that could see citizens facing travel restrictions. He also criticised the state of healthcare, tourism, and economic management under the current administration.

The UWP leader further claimed that the Anchorage on the Waterfront, which officially opened last week, was an initiative adopted from his administration.

  1. This Guy is a stubbornness case study! So boastful as he did last elections when he said “if st judes is not finished under his watch, then he (guy Joseph) should not be re elected!”….Now in 2025 he is beckoning PJP to call elections before August if he pjp thinks he is “man”. You must learn Guy.
