Three Titles, Six Medals For Saint Lucia In Guadeloupe Boxing

Six boxers from Saint Lucia returned home with six medals from this past weekend’s Caribbean Trophy Boxing Tournament in Guadeloupe. That haul included three gold medals, two silver, and one bronze.

Saint Lucia finished third with the smallest team, behind hosts Guadeloupe and second-placed Martinique. Canada, French Guiana, and St Martin also participated in this competition.

Team Saint Lucia.

On Saturday evening, 15-year-old Alex Nachan got Saint Lucia’s medal rush underway. The talented youngster forced his Martiniquan opponent to throw the towel early in the second round. Nachan, who was earlier this month named the best junior boxer at the AMBC Caribbean Championships in Saint Lucia, had been putting his rival under heavy pressure in the 60-kilogramme junior class.

In the 75-kilogramme senior elite final, Kyle Marcel and team captain Kyghan Mortley faced off. Marcel had overcome Anthony Mauge of Martinique in the semifinals. It was sweet revenge for Marcel, who lost to Mauge just a few weeks ago. In the final, however, Mortley emerged victorious, giving Saint Lucia gold and silver in that division.

Knockout specialist John Didier silenced the arena in the first round of his 92kg light-heavyweight final bout against Canadian champion Richelet Richet. Didier exerted his dominance, delivering a barrage of heavy blows, which forced three eight-second counts in the first round.

Justice Joseph captured a silver medal following a comprehensive performance in the 67kg category. Following his loss in the 60kg elite semifinals, Danaii Cooman brought home a bronze medal.

The team arrived back home Sunday evening, weighted down with hardware. The sextet was led by head coach Conrad Fredericks and senior coach Yunior Quintero-Perez, manager Shannon Lebourne, and delegation head David Christopher.
