Saint Lucia’s Olympic champion Julien Alfred is set to kick off her European campaign next month in Croatia, as the world’s fastest woman has been confirmed for the 75th Boris Hanžeković Memorial at Zagreb’s Mladost Stadium.
The Paris 2024 100m gold medallist and 200m silver medallist will compete in the half-lap event, entering the race with the world’s fastest time this year.
Fresh off her blistering 21.88-second run at the Tom Jones Memorial in Gainesville, Florida, expectations are soaring for the remainder of Alfred’s season. The 23-year-old University of Texas graduate aims to cap her year with a double gold at the World Championships in Tokyo.
In Zagreb, she will also target the meet’s 200m record of 22.04, set by Christine Mboma in 2021. Spectators will be eager to witness the first sub-22-second performance at the event when the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold concludes on May 24. Alfred has dipped under 22 seconds four times in her career and could become just the fifth active athlete to achieve the feat at least five times.
Beyond her European tour, Alfred has secured her place among the first 26 athletes to qualify for the 2026 World Athletics Championships in Budapest. With individual event winners set to receive US$150,000 next September, the Olympic champion is currently entered only in the 100m, though a 200m bid remains possible, depending on her 2025 season.
