Rangers Reinstated to Patrol Beaches, Parks, and Tourist Zones

Forty-three special police constables have completed their training and taken up positions within the newly reinstated Rangers Unit.

According to a press release from the Office of the Prime Minister, the rangers, trained by the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force, will be tasked with enhancing security in key tourism areas, protecting local communities and improving the overall visitor experience.

Their duties will also include enforcing beach vending and licensing regulations, preventing illegal sand mining, safeguarding sea turtle nesting sites and preserving the island’s natural flora and fauna.

Irvin Mason, a former member of the Special Services Unit, will lead the newly established Rangers Unit.

“You have a serious job, a mix between enforcement and security,” Prime Minister Phillip J. Pierre told the new rangers during the graduation ceremony on April 25. Minister for Tourism Dr Ernest Hilaire described the rangers as “law enforcement and tourism ambassadors”.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Ronald Phillip reminded the graduates that their performance will directly impact the vital tourism sector.

“It is essential that you recognise your importance, not just as another statistic or uniform but as guardians of visitor safety and the custodians of order across our beaches, parks and the national assets under the care of the National Conservation Authority,” Phillip said.
