American fined after airport drug arrest

The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) has confirmed that a United States citizen has been fined following the discovery of a controlled substance in his possession at the Hewanorra International Airport on Saturday.

Michael Gary Charlemagne, 45, was fined $6 000, to be paid by Thursday, for offences related to having less than $2 000 worth of cannabis. If he does not pay up, he will spend three months in prison.

The drugs were found in Charlemagne’s luggage during a routine security operation at the airport on Saturday, July 12, police said.

“The joint operation conducted by the Gangs, Narcotics and Firearms Unit, Southern department and the Customs and Excise Department, targeted passengers arriving on Delta flight 1064 from Atlanta,” the unit’s head, Inspector Shervon Matthieu, said.

“Charlemagne was found carrying 13 vacuum-sealed packages of cannabis, pre-rolled joints, vapes and rolling paper with a total weight of 365 grammes and an estimated street value of $1 825.”

Charlemagne was arrested and charged the following day with three offences – possession of a controlled drug, cannabis, possession of a controlled drug with intent to supply and the importation of a controlled drug.

He was detained in police custody and later transported to the second District Court at the Bordelaise Correctional Facility on Monday, July 14, when he pleaded guilty to the charges.

  1. To me that just not making any sense so what’s the big deal about a man traveling with his weed to enjoy on this tropical island. It’s time that all those stupid laws are abolish everyone is planting their weed in st lucia for them to enjoy …

  2. Maybe you people should open your eyes go with the flow and start selling weed some people take it for medical purposes and maybe there’s a reason he had to travel with his thing why you have to put the man in jail for a little bit of weed doesn’t make sense..

  3. The article says the drugs were in his luggage – if he traveled from the US with drugs – rest assured he would have been arrested in the US for carrying the drugs. Perhaps there is more to this story – just saying.

  4. Since when cannabis is a drug. I thought that it was a herb or just weed . I see nothing wrong with a traveler carry his weed with him to enjoy in this beautiful tropical island …..
