Saint Lucia made a strong start to the 39th CARIFTA Aquatics Championships, securing five medals, including three gold, on the opening day on Saturday, April 4, at the Pierre Samot Community Aquatic Centre in Le Lamentin, Martinique. The 12-member team is currently eighth overall.
Sapphire Parks is well on her way to repeating as the top athlete in the 11-12 girls category. Parks, who took the meet by storm on debut last year in Trinidad and Tobago, picked up right where she left off, taking two gold medals and one bronze. In the 100-metre butterfly, she swam 1:08:04 in the final from Lane 4. She added a bronze medal in 32.37 seconds in the 50m backstroke, then polished off her opening night with a 2:57.22 victory in the 200m breaststroke.

On his CARIFTA debut, Tyler Dantes got a gold medal in the 11-12 boys’ 50m backstroke, swimming 31.61 seconds. In his fourth and final CARIFTA Aquatics appearance, Antoine Destang kicked his campaign off with a silver medal in 56.36 seconds in the 15-17 boys’ 100m butterfly. Dylan Corcoran was also fifth in the final of the 11-12 200m breaststroke for boys.
Saint Lucia, with its 12-member team, accumulated 45 points after the first day of competition.
