Dezral eyes Carnival hat trick

Dezral Long made history last weekend by winning back-to-back national carnival crowns, first the Soca Monarch crown with Car featuring Jardel and then the Calypso crown, which he also won in 2024.

So the big question: “Is he going for crown number three this year, the Road March?

Dezral flashed a wide, knowing grin when we posed the question. “Well, we might as well go for it,” he replied.

Ahead of the competition, Dezral told St Lucia Times that he and Jardel had released Car as a “kicks-off song to make a little contribution to Lucian Carnival”.

“The song was released very early in the season and when we saw that the fans were really getting into it we decided to give the competition a shot and here we are,” he said.

Following the win last Friday, Dezral says he enjoyed performing the song alongside Jardel and just wanted to give it his all to those who had supported him and had been requesting the song which now has more than 200,000 views on YouTube.

“The people came out to support us, they have been excited about the song and we were just as excited to perform it. We had fun.”

Did that fun stretch him going into the Calypso finals? “It did a little. I did not have as big a team as I had for Calypso, so that did put a little pressure on me, and for the first song during the Calypso competition I had to really manage my vocals,” he told us.

Dezral’s winning songs were The Kaiso Goat and The Immigrant.

Car has been making the rounds at all the Carnival fetes and is expected to be a major contender for the Road March title.

Strong contenders include Bronx and Matta with Mash Up PartyRicky T – Freak OutWe Di Vibes by Imran Nerdy and Ti Blacks, and I Cry by Calto.

“I mean, I guess it is how much it is played and how much people request it on the road,” Dezral says of his Road March chances. “But a lot of people have been telling me that the song is their choice for the road, so I just hope that, you know, it happens.”

Dezral says he is happy with the music for Lucian Carnival this year and is calling on everyone to support the artists and the music, whether it is Calypso, Groovy Soca, Power Soca or Dennery Segment.
