Sammy Foundation celebrates 10 years with 30 scholarships

More than two dozen families are being supported by the Daren Sammy Foundation for the upcoming school year, after the organisation made its 10th annual scholarship presentation this week. Celebrating a decade of giving, DSF is also marking the third year of its collaboration with Republic Bank, through the bank’s Power To Make A Difference Programme.

“We are excited to lend support to those in need,” declared Cathy Daniel-Sammy, vice president of DSF. “Ten years ago, we gave out 10 scholarships, and today, with the help of Republic Bank through their PMAD Programme, we are able to give 30 scholarships to deserving students.”

Established by two-time World Cup winner Daren Sammy, the scholarship scheme recognises and rewards exceptional students who demonstrate dedication, diligence and a passion for sports. The scholarship, $2,500 for secondary school and tertiary students, and $1,500 for primary school pupils, covers tuition fees, school textbooks, bags and uniforms. Recipients must have a 75 percent grade.

This year’s presentation was a family affair. Sammy, who is coach of the West Indies men’s team, was unable to attend. But all of his children were present to assist, alongside his wife Daniel-Sammy and Gezella Claxton, country lead at Republic Bank.

“It is important and dear to us,” she said. “Because both my husband and myself grew up with less fortunate situations. And we have been blessed, and have always wanted to do something like this for others, just like it was done for him in his career, starting out in cricket. So it’s something that is very dear and near to our hearts.

One of this year’s recipients, Rhurshaun Darcy, placed 12th nationwide with an impressive score of  97.8, making him the foundation’s highest-scoring male for this year. Taya St Clair achieved a score of  95.6, earning her the title of highest-scoring female. Both were gifted laptops.

The foundation has now awarded scholarships to over 150 students worth more than EC$300,000. The organisation’s main fundraiser is a golf tournament on August 29, in collaboration with the Caribbean Premier League and Republic Bank.
