The Government of Saint Lucia has enhanced its crime-fighting capacity by delivering new vehicles, bulletproof vests and a mobile forensic unit to the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) and the Saint Lucia Forensic Science Laboratory.
The official handover on Wednesday, August 20, comes as the nation confronts a surge in violent and gun-related crime. Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister and National Security Minister Philip J. Pierre reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to public safety and its confidence in the police force.
“You have the full confidence of the government to carry out your duties,” Pierre said. “I believe with guidance, encouragement, and a system of meritocracy, where every officer is rewarded for their effort without favouritism, the police force will prevail, and law and order in Saint Lucia will also prevail.”
Minister for Crime Prevention Jeremiah Norbert stressed the life-saving importance of the protective gear provided, citing its critical role in safeguarding officers on the frontline.
“I know what a bulletproof vest can do. We’ve had instances where police officers have been shot at, and the only reason they’re alive is because they had a bulletproof vest,” Norbert said.
He also cautioned the RSLPF to ensure the proper maintenance of the vehicles received, reminding officers that some relatively new units had already been sidelined due to poor upkeep. “The fleet must be preserved to ensure long-term effectiveness,” he added.
Acting Commissioner of Police, Ronald Phillip, welcomed the additional support, describing the new resources as timely and essential in the current security climate.
“In recent times, we have seen an increase in the use of firearms in the commission of offences,” Phillip noted. “This worrying trend is not unique to our shores, but it demands a response that is timely, strategic, and robust. The provision of body armour, fit for purpose and tailored to today’s realities, could not have come at a better time.”
In addition to the RSLPF handover, the Saint Lucia Forensic Science Laboratory received a specialised mobile forensic unit. The vehicle, designed for rapid deployment, will allow forensic staff to collect samples directly in the field, process bulk seizures on-site, and provide additional support during major investigations. Officials say it will significantly enhance the lab’s flexibility and strengthen its ability to assist police.
Director of the Forensic Science Laboratory. Fernanda Henry expressed gratitude for the unit and emphasised the lab’s ongoing role in supporting justice.
“As the scientific arm of criminal investigations on island, we at the Saint Lucia Forensic Science Laboratory remain committed to our mission to serve the cause of justice through an ethical, unbiased, quality and scientific forensic service in Saint Lucia,” Henry said.

just one day after the opposition criticized the closure of the lab this government will pretend that they are investing resources in it, how convenient.. vote these red clowns out of office now.
Too little to late for you Pjp the failed minister for national security and the failed crime prevention minister. You all must go as we now have zero confidence in you.
Just don’t bring another poor dog in to be poisoned by criminals from whatever side of the fence. Still waiting to hear how that actually occurred, although a “thorough investigation was taking place”, Hmmm… This island is doomed from inaction!
