Babonneau MP Says She Awaits Official Word on Replacement

Despite reports last week that the Saint Lucia Labour Party (SLP) has endorsed a new candidate for the Babonneau constituency, sitting MP Virginia Albert-Poyotte says she has yet to receive formal notification.

Albert-Poyotte, who won the seat for the SLP in the 2021 general elections – defeating the United Workers Party’s Ezechiel Joseph by 3,245 votes to 3,125 – addressed the matter during Monday’s pre-Cabinet press briefing.

“I was informed through a very short message by an undisclosed source,” she told reporters. “So I am waiting for the official correspondence on that matter. When I get the official correspondence, I will respond accordingly.

“But as I said, the Labour Party has its process of selecting candidates. I am not the one that dictates that, and whatever the party agrees to, I have no objection.”

Albert-Poyotte currently serves as Minister for Labour and Gender Affairs.

Last Wednesday, members of the Babonneau constituency group hosted a meet-and-greet in Desbarras to introduce the newly endorsed candidate, John Estephane. The event was attended by SLP supporters and local organisers.

Estephane, a former educator and past principal of Desbarras Primary School, is the brother of former UWP government minister Edmund Estephane.

He has held leadership roles in the Saint Lucia Teachers Union, the Babonneau Sports Council, and currently serves as vice president of the Saint Lucia National Cricket Association. He is also a director on the Windward Islands Cricket Board.

  1. W-h-a-a-h! Labour eh playin. One minute you are a minister, the next minute you are being wheeled out. It brings to mind the reality show, “Survivor.” They take the lady fire.
