SLASPA taking action to ease Port Castries congestion

The Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA) is taking steps to address regional and global logistics pressures affecting operations at Port Castries.

According to a press release, recent supply chain challenges have been “compounded locally by large volumes of empty containers at the port and the slow pace of their evacuation.”

This has caused significant challenges to container deliveries and removing empty containers, contributing to “inefficiencies and higher costs with direct implications for businesses and households across Saint Lucia.”

SLASPA has announced several measures aimed at improving efficiency including:

  • Establishing an offsite empty container depot by mid-November
  • Waiving storage fees for empty containers from September 15 to October 31 to encourage faster removal
  • Redesigning traffic flow within the container yard and refining internal procedures to improve turnaround times

SLASPA says resolving these issues will require cooperation from shipping lines, trucking associations, consignees, and importers. The authority remains committed to strengthening the resilience of Port Castries amid current global logistics pressures.
