Two dead, multiple incidents reported over thanksgiving weekend

The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) has released details of several serious incidents that occurred over the Thanksgiving weekend, including two homicides, a firearm recovery, a police-involved shooting, and a major road traffic collision.

According to the RSLPF, the incidents stretched across the Northern and Eastern divisions, prompting heightened police presence and multiple ongoing investigations.

Fatal shooting in Dennery

Around 2:45 a.m. on October 4, police responded to reports of gunfire at Trou A’Leau, Dennery.

Officers from the Dennery and Richfond Police Stations discovered the lifeless body of 24-year-old Jay Collymore of Over-the-Bridge, Dennery, lying in a drain with apparent gunshot wounds. Collymore was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical practitioner. A post-mortem examination has been scheduled, and the Major Crimes Unit is now leading the investigation.

Severe road collision in Dennery

Later on October 4, around 6:00 a.m., police were called to a severe collision along Fregate Road, Dennery, involving a motor SUV and a 15-seater public service minibus.

Several individuals were found injured on the roadway. Fire Service personnel were already on scene providing emergency medical care before the injured were transported to the St Jude Hospital for further treatment. Both vehicles sustained extensive front-end damage, but police confirmed that no fatalities resulted from the crash.

The RSLPF continues to urge motorists to exercise caution and patience along Saint Lucia’s roads, especially during holiday weekends.

Police-involved shooting in Babonneau

In another incident, around 1:07 p.m. on October 4, police officers attached to the Babonneau Police Station encountered a man identified as Antonius, also known as Kartel, of Gesneau, Babonneau.

The man, who is an outpatient of the Mental Wellness Centre, reportedly threw rocks at a marked police vehicle, causing damage. Officers say they attempted to restrain him for transport to the Mental Wellness Centre when a firearm was discharged, resulting in a non-fatal injury.

Antonius was transported to the OKEU Hospital, where he remains in stable condition. The Major Crimes Unit has launched an investigation into the shooting.

Second Homicide in Gros Islet

The weekend’s second fatal shooting occurred on October 5, around 8:10 a.m.

Police responded to reports of a body at Morne Serpent, Gros Islet, where they discovered 35-year-old Neil Peter lying on a concrete pavement with apparent gunshot injuries.

Peter was pronounced dead at the scene by a medical practitioner. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death. The Major Crimes Unit has taken over the case. In its official statement, the RSLPF reaffirmed its dedication to protecting citizens and maintaining law and order across the island.

“The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force remains steadfast in its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens and visitors,” the release stated. “We continue to spare no effort in creating and maintaining a safe environment where all can live and thrive.”

The public is again reminded that anonymous tips can be submitted through the Crime Hotline (555) or the Crime Hotline App to assist with any ongoing investigations.

Firearm recovery in Gros Islet

Police say a joint operation targeting robbery and theft suspects in the Gros Islet and Rodney Bay areas led to the arrest of 36-year-old Jamaican national, Jemeil Junior Simpson, who resides on Dauphin Street, Gros Islet.

Simpson, who does not hold a valid firearm license, was reportedly found with a .380 Glock 25 pistol containing two rounds of ammunition. He was charged on October 6, with possession of a firearm and ammunition without a valid license and is expected to appear before the First District Court for arraignment.
