Nestor tips off UNT tenure with double-double

Rising Saint Lucian basketball star Megan Nestor has picked up right where she left off last season. She debuted for the University of North Texas women’s team with a double-double in one of the programme’s biggest wins ever. UNT’s Mean Green blew out Oklahoma Christian 106-36 in the November 4 season opener at The Super Pit in Denton, Texas.

Nestor, a former national netballer for Saint Lucia, is one of 11 newcomers for UNT this season, transferring from Wayland Baptist University, where she set school records for rebounding, emerging as a consistent threat to get into double digits for points and boards for the Flying Queens. Her 15.9 points and 13.5 rebounds per game in 2023-2024 earned her the honour of having her jersey on display at the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Starting at centre, the senior from the village of Canaries kicked off her tenure at UNT with a team-high 10 rebounds in the season opener, along with 17 points on 7-8 shooting. Only Tiffany Hammond, with a career-high 22 points, was more prolific, leading six players in double figures.

“We have a variety of players that can score the ball at a high level and should be confident in how they can score,” said head coach Jason Burton. “I think we have a great balance of players that can stretch the floor, and then we have some bigs inside that can really score.”

A Lisa Leslie Centre of the Year Award Watchlist selection, Nestor went to the free throw line four times, converting all but one of her shots from the charity stripe. She added two assists and a block in 22 minutes of action.

The offensive explosion was the second time under Burton that the Mean Green have exceeded 100 points. His teams now hold the highest-scoring game in programme history – 117 in his UNT debut two years ago against UNT Dallas, and the fifth-highest mark in Monday’s 106-point outing against the Oklahoma Christian Lady Eagles.

North Texas will return to action on Friday night against Grambling State in the second of four games to open the season at The Super Pit.
