Melius recalled to Windwards for Regional Super50 cricket

Kimani Melius returns to the regional spotlight this month, named in the Windward Islands squad for the CG United Super50 after a two-year absence from List A cricket. The former West Indies Under-19 captain is one of four Saint Lucians selected for the five-match tournament, which bowls off Wednesday, November 19, in Trinidad & Tobago.

The Windward Islands Cricket Board named a 14-member squad for the five-game regional series. The sub-regional team has only lifted the 50-over title four times since the tournament began in 1972. Saint Lucians Johnson Charles and Larry Edward were in the victorious 2017-18 squad. Edward took two wickets in the final, as the Windwards beat defending champions Barbados by three wickets in Antigua & Barbuda.

This time around, Melius joins allrounder Shadrack Descarte and young fast bowlers Keon Gaston and McKenny Clarke in the final squad. Wicketkeeper Noelle Leo and fast bowler Dillan John were also involved in training with the Windwards from early October.

For Melius, it is a welcome return to limited overs regional cricket. The 24-year-old right-handed top order batter from Boguis has played 23 List A matches since making his debut for West Indies B in 2018. But he has not competed in this format since November 2023, when he appeared for the West Indies Academy against Guyana.

Melius has made 397 career runs at an average of 17.26, with a high score of 46. But his best year was his first, playing for West Indies B at the age of 17, averaging 21.60 in five fixtures.

Descarte, just turned 28, has played 14 List A one-day matches, compiling 180 runs at an average of 15, with a high score of 60, and adding 13 wickets at a 24.61 average. Better known for his prowess in the T20 format, the man from Mon Repos is nonetheless expected to be an important player for the Windwards. He was part of the Saint Lucia Kings team that won the 2024 Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) title.

Gaston, also from Mon Repos, has played just one regional limited overs match, in which he was wicketless against the West Indies Academy last year. But the 22-year-old played a massive role in helping Saint Lucia win the Windwards title this year, and went on to take four wickets for the Kings in the 2025 CPL.

Clarke, a former West Indies Under-19 player, was with the Trinbago Knight Riders when they won the 2025 CPL. He was wicketless in his two matches, but took a couple of stunning catches in the deep. In 14 List A matches for West Indies Academy, the 22-year-old from Castries has taken 10 wickets.

The Windwards begin their Regional Super50 campaign next Wednesday against the Leeward Islands Hurricanes at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy.
