From Groovy Monarch to global stages

By: Simone Tull

Even months after his Groovy Monarch win with the mega track Warning, soca artiste Imran Nerdy is still riding high on the success of this past carnival season. Having set a goal of “trying to win everything that there is to win”, he proudly shared, “I gave myself five years, but we accomplished it in three.”

In full momentum and showing no signs of slowing down, he has already returned to the studio and is gearing up to release what is sure to be his next big hit. Flavor is a track that promises to capture the same energy that continues to grow his fan base across the region. Speaking after returning from Barbados for the annual Barbados Food and Rum Festival, the soca star is excited about his upcoming release.

Flavor celebrates women in all their diversity. “It’s all about women having different flavours, not only in complexion but in personalities. They might have caramel women, they might have vanilla women, they might have dark chocolate women,” he explained.

Adding with a laugh, “At the same time, you might have women, their flavour is like pepper — you have some women that are hot. They are that type of person that is very aggressive and sharp.”

With a smile, he said, “There are some women that are smooth. You have certain women, their personalities are basically like honey — they are just sweet, smooth, soft, slow flowing.” It is just about women expressing themselves in different ways.

Flavor will be added to his growing repertoire as he continues to wave the Saint Lucian flag high, performing on international stages and connecting with audiences far beyond his Caribbean roots.

Now, he is turning his focus toward collaborations with several of Barbados’ top acts, including Fadda Fox, Lead Pipe, Saddis, and Hypasounds, who also shares Saint Lucian roots. “We are usually on the international shows together,” he said. “It was just only fitting that moving forward, the collaboration began.”

For Nerdy, relatability is what sets his music apart. “People always know me for having a song that actually connects directly or tells a story that is actually true,” he said. “It’s something that they usually want to say but they do not know how to say it. I put it in the form of music, that people can basically say it, without actually having to say it. It helps people express themselves.”

Music drives his creative process, and Nerdy prefers to let the rhythm take control. “It is easier for me to catch a rhythm when I just go on a free run, other than sitting and writing on a paper. It is more natural that way,” he explained.

Imran Nerdy is living out his dreams. Although throughout his childhood he aspired to emulate Machel Montano, Bunji Garlin, and Ricky T, over time, he has carved out a sound that is uniquely his own. His bucket list included a collaboration with Ricky T, which has already been ticked off, while working with Machel and Bunji remains on the targets he has set.

As the new season approaches, Nerdy is laser-focused on remaining true to his brand and producing quality music. With his undeniable drive and creative vision, there is no doubt that he will remain a staple on the soca scene for years to come.
