NDP sweeps to power, ending 24-year reign of Gonsalves’ ULP

In a historic political shift, the New Democratic Party (NDP) has won today’s general election in St Vincent and the Grenadines, ending nearly 25 years of Unity Labour Party (ULP) rule.

The victory derailed Dr Ralph Gonsalves’ bid to secure an unprecedented seventh consecutive term in office. Preliminary results showed the Dr Godwin Friday-led NDP ahead in as many as 12 of the country’s 15 constituencies.

Dr Gonsalves, who has served as prime minister since 2001, appeared set to retain his Windward seat even as the ULP was swept from government. Dr Friday also comfortably held onto his Northern Grenadines constituency.
