Hilaire reacts to win, calls Election Day “brutal”

Reelected Castries South MP Dr Ernest Hilaire has described Election Day as “brutal,” reflecting on what he said was one of the most challenging campaigns of his political career.

His reaction came as the Saint Lucia Labour Party secured a commanding return to office, winning 14 seats, with two independents openly supporting the government – an outcome many observers are already framing as a “16-1” victory.

Speaking shortly after being reelected, Hilaire said the day tested both him and his team, but he credited their resilience for carrying them through.

“I have the greatest team, I really do, because today was rough,” he said. “They know the vision we have for Castries South… There’s a lot more work to be done.”

While much of his response centred on gratitude, the MP did not shy away from criticising his UWP opponent Tommy Descartes.

“Tommy Descartes joined them as a new candidate and instead of trying to set a new path for politics in this country, he reinforced the same old negativity,” Hilaire said.

Hilaire emphasised that the focus now shifts back to governing and advancing the projects and priorities laid out for Castries South.
