Sharks end 2025 on high note at Lucian Grand Prix

Led by Keyanno Elibox, Zoe Fortune and Tamykh Bryan, Sharks Swim Club ended the 2025 aquatics season on a high note, winning last weekend’s (December 5–7) Lucian Grand Prix at the Rodney Heights Aquatics Centre. Six teams competed.

Sharks combined for 1 277 points, with Sea Jays sitting in second place on 1 197. Lightning Aquatics, RR Aquatic, Southern Flying Fish and Rodney Heights Aquatics Club were all unable to get into quadruple figures.

Sharks women were especially strong, with 635 points to 356 for Sea Jays. Southern Flying Fish were third on 227. A balanced showing from the Sharks boys produced 606 points, behind Sea Jays with 797, but enough to gain the overall lead. Lighting Aquatics were third among the boys on 281 points.

Fortune led four of her teammates in the top five for the 9-10 division. She won four gold medals and totalled 55 points. Amber Francois, Chloe Emmanus, and Isabella McLean also contributed in that class. Four Sharks girls were in the top ten for Under-9 girls as well, and seven in the top eight for 13-14s. Bryan, 22, was the sole 18-and-over female swimmer, handing her 27 points.

Elibox had another brilliant weekend, winning three of his six events to top the Under-9 boys in 63 points. He is fresh off a high points trophy at the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States Swim Championships.

“Let me congratulate our swimmers for fighting throughout the Grand Prix weekend, swimming many best times, our coaches for preparing our swimmers down to the final taper, which led to wild celebrations on Sunday afternoon when it was announced we had won the meet,” said coach David Peterkin.

“Let me thank our officials who ensured there was a meet, our technical officials, our timers and our marshals. Without them, the meet would not have happened. Sharks to the rescue once more. Our parents and, of course, our team managers were awesome with the support they gave. Our battle cry, ‘Let’s go, Sharks!’ will soon resonate with all our parents in the near future. And in the end, the love we gave as a team was justified in the results of the meet.”

The meet saw one senior national record and three additional age-group marks. Jayden Xu lowered the previous record for the 25-metre short-course men’s 200m, earning him one of his four gold medals. A national swimmer, Xu stopped the clock at 2:16.09, taking 0.14 of a second off Christopher Phillips’ time from the 2016 RHAC Invitational. It was also an all-time Saint Lucian best for the 13-14 division.

Sapphire Parks set the other three new records. The top swimmer her age at the CARIFTA Aquatics Championships and OECS Swimming earlier this year, Parks was unbeaten in the 11-12 category. She set new age group records for the 100m freestyle, 200m backstroke, and 200m breaststroke.

Parks finished in 1:02.25 for the 100 free, taking four hundredths of a second from Katie Kyle’s 2015 effort at the same meet. She bettered Fayth Jeffrey for her other two records, 2:33.33 in the 200 back, shaving more than ten seconds from the previous time, and 2:54.19 for the 200 breast, a three-second improvement.
