Hewanorra Airport redevelopment shows steady progress

The redevelopment of Hewanorra International Airport is continuing, with the most important projects now moving forward as part of the airport’s long- needed modernisation.

The status of the works was reviewed during a recent site visit by Minister for Infrastructure, Ports Services and Energy, Shawn Edward, and senior officials of the Saint Lucia Air and Sea Ports Authority (SLASPA).

Construction has resumed on the new Air Traffic Control Tower, which was a major component of the redevelopment aimed at improving safety and air navigation. The tower is being built by NH International (Caribbean) Ltd. in joint venture with Aeronav Inc.

Officials also reviewed several operational areas, including the crash fire hall, the air cargo facility, the meteorological services department, the terminal building, and the wider redevelopment site.

SLASPA noted that the airport upgrade, supported by the Caribbean Regional Air Transport Connectivity Project – Saint Lucia, focuses on runway rehabilitation and is funded by the World Bank.

Edward said the redevelopment of Hewanorra International Airport remains a priority national project and is key to improving efficiency, safety, and overall airport operations.

The project is expected to strengthen Saint Lucia’s connectivity and position Hewanorra International Airport as a modern gateway for regional and international travel

  1. u all not ashamed? szero development in the nation,s most important town. this is where the heart of ytourism lies, where everyone must pass to go elsewhere on the island. yet both SLP and UWP have done nothing for vieux fort. instead the labour boys and Uwp who have land in case en bas and the north have ensured that all development takes place in the north. useless people , no thinking. airport backward and so less than 3rd world world

  2. This aritcle lacks content and much detail to edify the reading public about the headlines.
It is a repeat of old news that has been circulating since before 2016. This tower has been under construction before 2021 when the contractor was expel in 2024 due to alleged health and safety breaches. There was a set completion date when wirk started in 2020.
What is the new set completion date.
Has design and new terminal building abandon, what is the proposed financial cost? Etc, etc, this just some of the info we the public needs to know in any article on this development which was identified as a national priority since 2006 or before. It is 20yrs plus outstanding…??
