Edward record highlights overseas athletics exploits

A record-breaking season continues for Joy Edward, who had a career-best indoor performance in indoor women’s shot put over the weekend, while also extending her school record. Edward won her event by some distance at the Youngstown State University Mid-Major Invitational on Saturday, January 31.

Competing for the University of Charleston Golden Eagles at the Watson and Tressel Training Site (WATTS) in Ohio, the Babonneau native threw an even 15.00 metres for victory. She waited until her final throw to extend the school record of 14.69m she set just two weeks ago, but five of her six throws were better than 13.35m in second place.

Most crucially, the junior transfer had her longest throw ever indoors, bettering her national-record mark of 14.85m from February 2024. Her outing on Saturday represented her fourth time going at least 15m, but it was by far her earliest such effort ever. She is now 11th overall in NCAA Division II for the season.

Edward added another first-place finish on the weekend in Ohio, topping the table in the women’s weight throw. Her winning throw of 17.50m was second only to the 17.59 she threw earlier in January. She is shaping up to improve in the hammer throw when outdoor season begins in mid to late April.

Wichita State freshman Jasmine Stiede, a former national youth footballer, won the women’s 800m with a time of 2:17.45 at Saturday’s Coach Wilson Invitational in the Heskett Center.

Kereser Augustin led the Washburn University Ichabods in the women’s 400m at the Washburn Open, placing third in 55.87 for an NCAA provisional time. She also competed in the 200m in Topeka, clocking 4.80 seconds for 12th place.
