Hetmyer and Shepherd power Windies to opening World Cup victory

The West Indies Men’s Cricket Team got off to a victorious start at this year’s T20 World Cup, securing a 35-run win over Scotland on Saturday. The fixture, played at Eden Gardens in India, saw notable performances with both bat and ball, efforts the Men in Maroon will hope to build on as they pursue a third championship in the tournament.

Captain Shai Hope was sent in to bat first and began slowly in partnership with Brandon King at the top of the order. However, the pair put on 54 runs for the first wicket and, crucially, did not lose a wicket during the powerplay period.

When Hope was dismissed, in-form batsman Shimron Hetmyer arrived at the crease.

The Guyanese left-hander exploded alongside Rovman Powell, with the pair adding 81 runs off just 37 balls to seize control of the innings. Hetmyer finished with a scintillating 64 off 36 deliveries, including a 22-ball half-century. His innings featured six sixes and two fours. Powell contributed an impressive 24 off 14 balls, while Sherfane Rutherford added a quick-fire 26 off 13 deliveries. The West Indies set Scotland a target of 184 for victory.

Scotland also started their innings slowly, largely due to excellent powerplay bowling from the West Indies. The Scots ended the fielding restriction period at 38 for 3. However, a 78-run partnership between Richie Berrington and Tom Bruce dragged Scotland back into contention. Scoreboard pressure eventually took its toll, as wickets fell in quick succession while attempting big hits. This collapse included four wickets in a single over from Romario Shepherd. Shepherd claimed a sensational hat trick, finishing with figures of five wickets for 20 runs and sealing a comfortable 35-run victory.

Man of the Match Shimron Hetmyer revealed that a strong mindset was responsible for his performance. Hetmyer arrived in India late due to visa challenges, but noted that those issues are now behind him as he focuses on his game.

“Everything happens for a reason. I’m not really complaining… From there, when I got here, it was just to put that behind me and focus on the game ahead and focus on my batting,” he said.

The West Indies will look to build from strength to strength as they seek a similar result against England in their second fixture of the World Cup on Wednesday.
