Saint Lucia suffer penalty heartbreak in Concacaf qualifier

Team Saint Lucia lost their opening match when the Concacaf Under-20 Men’s Qualifiers kicked off on Monday, February 23, at Complejo Deportivo FCRF-Plycem in San Rafael de Alajuela, Costa Rica. Antigua & Barbuda beat the young Piton Boyz 1-0 in Group C.

Jamaica-based midfielder Brandon Satchell got a lucky bounce just about 10 minutes from time in the opening period. Saint Lucian goalkeeper Tyrell Vidal was unable to handle a cross fizzed in from the right side by Vaughn Jackson and parried it to the middle of the box, where it fell to Satchell, who poked home to give the young Benna Boys the lead.

With one minute remaining in the first half, Kayonte George, who plays with Finn Holsing in Germany, curled a brilliant effort into the far side of the Saint Lucia goal, but the Antiguan captain only found the far upright.

The best chance came for Saint Lucia at the tail end of the game. With just 10 seconds remaining in regulation, captain Eymani Butcher won a penatty affer a clumsy challenge from Ivan Grant just inside the box.

Kallis Mondesir stepped up but was unable to force Tegan Gumbs to make what would have been just his second save of the game. Mondesir skied his kick and sank to the ground in despair.

Saint Lucia next play Dominica on Friday.
