Product safety will take centre stage this Friday (March 13) as the Consumer Affairs Department hosts a public symposium at Derek Walcott Square to mark World Consumer Rights Day, under the theme Safe Products, Confident Consumers.
The day is observed annually to highlight consumers’ fundamental rights and advocate for their respect and protection. This year focuses on product safety, with emphasis on ensuring that items sold in Saint Lucia meet the necessary safety standards to promote consumer confidence and support national economic stability.
Members of the public are invited to join the department’s team and its partners for a day of learning, engagement and community interaction.
Activities during the event will include a business expo and sales component, where local businesses will showcase a range of products and services and offer special promotions to patrons. Technical experts from the Saint Lucia Bureau of Standards will also conduct live product safety demonstrations, educating consumers on how to identify authentic products, understand safety labels and detect potentially hazardous goods. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in interactive quizzes for a chance to win prizes.
Consumers will also be able to speak directly with officers from the Consumer Affairs Department to raise concerns and gain information on the legal protections available to them.
“Safe products are not just a luxury, they are a fundamental right,” director of the Consumer Affairs Department Wendy Frederick says. “By hosting this symposium in the heart of the city, we aim to bridge the gap between businesses and consumers.”
The department, she adds, remains committed to ensuring a fair and safe marketplace.
“Everyone is encouraged to attend this free event to become empowered consumers while enjoying the festive atmosphere at the Square.”

SAFETY FIRST.
