A city school is at the centre of a controversy following an incident on Friday, May 8, that has since escalated.
MBC Prime first reported the incident on Monday, involving a male grade two student who was allegedly struck in the face with an object by his teacher.
The report noted the student had a visibly swollen nose bridge, which his mother attributed to being struck by the object.
The mother said that when she asked the teacher what had happened, he told her he had put something on TV for the class to watch, and that her son had turned away twice. She said her son told her, “When he turned the third time, he got a lash in his face with some pills bottle or some medication bottle.”
In a televised interview on MBC, the mother said that when she asked the teacher what happened, “he said to me that he actually sent the bottle after the class.”
After seeking medical attention for her son, the mother approached the school’s principal for redress. Unsatisfied with the principal’s response, she requested a meeting with education officials and the police.
St Lucia Times has learned that the mother remained dissatisfied with the officials’ response, which she felt was passive regarding the matter.
The situation has caused tension in the community where the mother and son live, and there have been threats against the teacher.
St Lucia Times also learned that the teacher is part of a well-known group in Saint Lucia that mentors students and encourages discipline and good behaviour.
The paper contacted Ministry of Education officials for comment and was informed that the matter is under investigation.
Sources also say that, due to rising tension and threats against the teacher, the school will be closed on Friday, May 15.
Very sticky situation for this teacher…..hope the child recovers well! Teachers story is lame though. That community needs a purge, you cannot tell me your only reaction is to threaten with violence..makes me wonder if that’s how this very little boy will end up!
