From the shores of the fishing village of Canaries, rising star Megan Nestor is headed to Madrid, as she officially begins her journey as a professional basketballer. Nestor was recruited by the Spanish team after an impressive college career in the United States.
A graduate of the University of North Texas, the former national netballer set rebounding records at two schools after transferring from Wayland Baptist. She also led the NAIA and NCAA in rebounding for two straight seasons.
Nestor is now the newest member of Movistar Estudiantes Madrid. At 24 years old and 6 ft 3 in, she averaged 12.8 points and 14.1 rebounds per game in college earlier this year.
Nestor earned the American Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year award and was selected for both the All-Conference First Team and All-Defensive First Team. After college, she joined the Chicago Sky’s WNBA training camp, which helped her prepare for her first season of European professional basketball with Estudiantes.
Incoming head coach Isaac Fernández says adding the talented Saint Lucian pivot gives the team a strong presence near the basket.
“Megan is the team’s clear centre, with a very good college career,” he said. “In addition, she has been drafted by a WNBA franchise, which speaks to the level she has shown in the United States. We are convinced that she may need some time to adapt to the league, but we believe that she has very good qualities and that her performance will be very high.”
The “Women in Black” had mixed results in the 2025-26 season. They did very well in the EuroCup, finishing Group I with a 5-1 record. However, in Spain’s LF Endesa league, they only reached the upper-middle tier and could not break into the top teams like Valencia and Girona.
Estudiantes are aiming to compete at the highest level of Spanish women’s basketball. They have added playmaker Laia Lamana, Spanish 3×3 star Júlia Soler, and 6-foot-3 American centre Kendall Cooper, who will join versatile forwards Irati Etxarri and Kristina Topuzović.
Nestor is expected to join Cooper and defensive specialist Etxarri as part of a formidable interior unit. This is her third team in three years, but she hopes to settle in Madrid and help her new team succeed.
