With the last days of Lucian Carnival approaching, health officials are warning Saint Lucians about a rise in illegal drug and psychoactive substance use.
The Substance Abuse Advisory Council Secretariat is urging revellers to be aware of new drugs like Molly and ecstasy. These substances, officials say, can be very dangerous and may cause symptoms such as shortness of breath, confusion and severe anxiety.
Natasha Lloyd-Felix, coordinator at the Substance Abuse Advisory Secretariat, encourages everyone taking part in this year’s festivities to stay safe and look out for each other.
“As you and your crew enjoy the festivities, we ask that you remain vigilant with your drinks and stay alert for those around you,” Lloyd-Felix said.
“We have noted over the past few days reports from medical practitioners, first responders and emergency room physicians of individuals presenting with concerning symptoms, including difficulty breathing, confusion, anxiety and these point to the possibility of exposure or use of substances that can induce these behaviours.
“If you notice any of those symptoms, whether with a member of your crew or with yourself, it’s important to seek immediate medical attention at one of our nearest facilities.”
Lloyd-Felix added that most national events have medical stations where people can get help if needed.
“We ask that all try their best to keep their crew close and keep their crews safe and to ensure that you reduce the risk of your drinks being tampered with and being exposed to any sort of spiking by any individuals,” she said.
Last year, the police arrested people for having Molly during Carnival.
In one case, a 33-year-old was found with packets of ecstasy, Molly and cannabis resin. The person was charged with several counts of drug possession and intent to supply.
In Saint Lucia, drug possession laws fall under the Drugs Prevention of Misuse Act. Having controlled drugs is considered a serious offence.
The police remind everyone to enjoy Lucian Carnival responsibly and always follow the law.
