Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre has extended condolences to the families of the two women who lost their lives in Saturday night’s fatal marine collision off Anse Cochon, while urging Saint Lucians to keep the victims, the injured and those still missing in their thoughts and prayers.
In a statement issued on Sunday, Pierre said he was “profoundly saddened” by the tragedy, which claimed the lives of 21-year-old Mhakeida Nestor of La Fargue, Choiseul, and 25-year-old Debbie Dolor of Market Road, Soufriere.
“On behalf of the Government and people of Saint Lucia, I extend my deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of Mhakeida Nestor and Debbie Dolor,” the Prime Minister said. “We mourn with you during this time of immense grief and pray that you find strength and comfort in the support of your families, friends and communities.”
Pierre also expressed concern for those injured in the collision and the families awaiting news of loved ones who remain unaccounted for.“Our thoughts are also with those who have been injured, and we wish them a full and speedy recovery. We remain especially mindful of the families anxiously awaiting news of their loved ones as search and rescue operations continue,” he said.
The Prime Minister commended officers of the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force, the Saint Lucia Fire Service, the Coast Guard, medical personnel, and all others involved in the emergency response, for their professionalism and dedication.
“Their professionalism, courage and dedication under extremely difficult circumstances are deeply appreciated,” Pierre said.He added that the Government would continue to support the ongoing response and investigations into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
The marine collision occurred at about 11:55 p.m. on Saturday in the waters off Anse Cochon and involved the vessel Ocean Angel and the pirogue Mango Tours.
According to the Royal Saint Lucia Police Force, preliminary investigations indicate that Mango Tours was travelling south while Ocean Angel was heading north when the vessels collided. Mango Tours sank following the impact, while Ocean Angel also sustained damage.
Police have confirmed that 14 people were injured and that search and rescue operations remain underway for two individuals who are still missing. Investigations into the cause of the collision are ongoing.
