Former Commonwealth Games competitor Makeba Alcide is back at the latest edition of the multisport event, but she is not at Glasgow 2026 to run, jump, or throw. Rather, the three-sport athlete is a member of the Commonwealth Sports Athlete Advisory Commission, for whom she was an official flagbearer during Thursday’s opening ceremony at the OVO Hydro.
Alcide, Saint Lucia’s 2013 Sportswoman of the Year, has represented the nation in athletics, netball, and rugby. She still holds a number of national records dating back to her time as a world-class combined events athlete. She competed in the heptathlon at the 2014 Commonwealth Games, which were also held in Glasgow.
Since that time, the University of Arkansas graduate has transitioned into coaching, and in 2024, she was elected to the AAC as its Caribbean delegate. She is vice-president of the Saint Lucia Athletics Association and has also served as chairperson of the Saint Lucia Athletes’ Commission.
In 2022, Alcide participated in the World Athletics Pilot Mentorship Course, where she graduated with top honours and became a certified World Athletics mentor. Her role with the AAC is to represent the interests and voices of athletes across the region while contributing to discussions on athlete welfare, safe sport, inclusion, integrity, and athlete representation throughout the Commonwealth Sport Movement.
“Makeba’s selection as one of the Commission’s flagbearers is a fitting recognition of her outstanding leadership, dedication to athlete advocacy, and continued commitment to advancing sport across the Commonwealth,” stated a release from the SLAA.
The Saint Lucia Olympic Committee has sent a three-member team to Glasgow 2026. Khailan Vitalis competes in the men’s 110m hurdles on Monday. Michael Joseph and Marvric Pamphile go in the heats of the men’s 400m on Tuesday. Team leader Helena Renee was the flagbearer and sole participant for the official Saint Lucia delegation at Thursday’s opening ceremony.
