‘I Trusted Him’ – Pierre mourns death of Evaristus Jn Marie

Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre has paid tribute to the late businessman and public servant Evaristus Jn Marie, calling him a trusted friend, confidant and critic. He said Jn Marie’s death has left a significant void.

Jn Marie died on July 31 at the age of 67 following an undisclosed illness.

At Monday’s pre-Cabinet press briefing, Pierre spoke about their friendship, which allowed for honest and sometimes critical conversations. He said their trust meant they could disagree without any hard feelings.

“Evaristus was my friend, my confidant. One of my biggest critics,” Pierre said. “I trusted Evaristus, so we could have these exchanges without any malice.”

The Prime Minister said Jn Marie’s commitment to the country was unquestionable.

“Evaristus loved Saint Lucia. Evaristus will be difficult for me to replace,” Pierre said.

He said their last conversation was on July 23 and lasted about 28 minutes. Even though he was ill, Jn Marie stayed optimistic and was thinking about returning to serve Saint Lucia.

The Prime Minister said Jn Marie had been working on a project to provide social housing, especially for low-income Saint Lucians who have trouble finding affordable homes.

Pierre said Jn Marie was eager to make that project a reality.

“God knows best. I miss him,” Pierre said.

Jn Marie’s death ended a career that lasted decades in both Saint Lucia’s private and public sectors.

At the time of his death, he was chairman of the National Insurance Corporation (NIC) and Bank of Saint Lucia, a board member of East Caribbean Financial Holding Company, managing director of Jn Marie & Sons, and a director of the Saint Lucia Electricity Services (LUCELEC).

He was also well known for his work in the petroleum industry. As president of the Saint Lucia Petroleum Dealers Association, Jn Marie often spoke up for petroleum retailers and addressed issues like fuel pricing and other challenges in the sector.

He also served the country as an independent senator and as Deputy President of the Senate.
