St Lucia Times has made a strong first impression at the 37th Caribbean Broadcasting Union (CBU) Media Awards, securing two awards and one special mention in its debut appearance in the regional competition.
The awards were announced on Wednesday during a ceremony broadcast live from the Atlantic Suites at the Hyatt in Georgetown, Guyana, where media organisations were recognised for excellence in print, digital and broadcast journalism.
St Lucia Times’ McAllister Hunt won Best Sports Photograph and Best News Photograph, while the Behind the Culture: Behind the Stage production received a Special Mention in the Caribbean Arts & Culture category.
The CBU singled out St Lucia Times as one of the competition’s standout first-time entrants.
“A slew of first timers made excellent impressions on the judges this year,” the CBU said, listing St Lucia Times among the entrants that made a strong impact.
It was also the only Saint Lucian media house to secure awards at this year’s competition.
CEO and Publisher Hermina Elcock, who accepted the awards on behalf of St Lucia Times, said the recognition was particularly meaningful given the organisation’s debut in the competition.
“To come into a competition of this calibre for the first time and leave with two awards and a special mention is a tremendous achievement for our team. It is recognition of the quality, creativity and commitment that go into the work we produce every day,” she said. “I’m especially proud of McAllister Hunt, whose photography earned both awards, and of everyone involved in Behind the Culture. This is a reflection of what our team can achieve, and we’re excited to build on this.”
A total of 92 award and special mention winners were revealed across 56 categories, covering print, digital, radio and television media.
The competition attracted entries from 13 countries and territories across the English, French and Spanish Caribbean.
