As the season reaches its halfway point, Vieux Fort South remain at the top of Tier 1 in the Saint Lucia Semi-Professional Football League. Defending champions La Clery and Dennery are still close behind after the latest matches at the Francis Baba Lastic Grounds in Gros Islet.
On Saturday, Vieux Fort South edged Soufriere 1-0 to stay on top. The decisive moment arrived in the 55th minute when Soufriere defender Mahvy Rismay turned the ball into his own net, following a powerful free kick from Trent Alexander.
VFS head coach Jamil Joseph was cautioned in the 73rd minute for dissent as his team held on to secure all three points.
Earlier, La Clery beat Mabouya Valley 3-1. Ronham Cooper put the champions ahead in the first minute, but Canius Sandiford equalised for Mabouya Valley with a penalty in the 41st minute.
La Clery regained control in the second half when substitute Keenan Joseph came on in the 65th minute and scored twice, in the 67th and 74th minutes, to secure the win.
Sunday’s Tier 1 double-header started with Canaries beating Anse La Raye 3-0, leaving their neighbours at the bottom of the table. Oneal Toussaint scored first in the 12th minute, then Alex Longville added a penalty in the 72nd minute and scored again in the 76th to seal the win.
In the nightcap, host team Gros Islet earned a 1-0 victory over Vieux Fort North, courtesy of a strike from Dervaj Edward in the 59th minute. Gros Islet finished the match with 10 men after Thierry Morille was sent off with a second yellow card in the 76th minute. It was their first win in three games.
These weekend results came after Thursday’s match, where Central Castries pulled off an upset by defeating title contenders Dennery 1-0. Benerrero Wellington scored the only goal in the ninth minute, stopping Dennery from moving to the top of the table.
Vieux Fort South lead with 17 points from eight matches, with La Clery second on 15. Dennery are third with 13 points and a game in hand. At the bottom, Central Castries and Gros Islet are seventh and eighth with nine points each, separated by goal difference. Mabouya Valley and Anse La Raye round out the bottom four with five points each.
The league continue midweek in Gros Islet, with fixtures scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday evening before another weekend double-header.
