Dennery Segment artiste Brendon Umpa Charlery has won the inaugural Dennery Segment Artiste of the Year award at the Caribbean Music Awards.
Other nominees in the category were Blackboy, DJ ASAP, Mighty, Nerdy and Dezral & Jardel.
Umpa was also nominated in the Dennery Segment Song of the Year and Fuzion Artiste of the Year categories.
The Dennery Segment awards were announced several days after the awards ceremony which was held in Port of Spain, Trinidad last Saturday.
Speaking to St.Lucia Times this week, Umpa said he was elated, adding that the win was not just for himself but for the genre and Saint Lucia.
“It really means a lot seeing that this is the highest award for Caribbean music and it shows how far Dennery Segment has come and the world is taking notice,” Umpa said.
He attended the awards ceremony but was already back in Saint Lucia when his award was announced. “I was actually at a river lime enjoying a one-pot, when Elmo the producer called me to give me the news,” he said.
In 2025, Umpa was named by Billboard as one of the ten Caribbean artistes to watch.
With hits like Pain Killer, One Drop, and Plat, among many others, Umpa has been one of the more prolific Dennery Segment artistes.
The self-proclaimed “Lucian Shakespeare”, who is also one of the most travelled Dennery Segment artistes, says consistency has been key to his successes.
“If you put in the hard work and keep trying to be better at what you do, you will reap the rewards,” he said.
