The Royal Saint Lucia Police Force (RSLPF) is making internal discipline a top priority and is asking people with unresolved disciplinary complaints to contact the Discipline Unit.
This appeal follows concerns about reports of police misconduct and indiscipline, which the RSLPF says have led to public mistrust and less confidence in the Force.
Superintendent Irvin Alfred, head of the Discipline Unit, said in a statement this week that discipline is a top priority for the Force.
“The Commissioner of Police has identified discipline within the organisation as a priority area in strengthening the organisation’s vision of providing a professional, accountable and effective policing service to the people of Saint Lucia,” he said.
“As the Discipline Officer, I recognise the importance of this responsibility and believe that discipline must be approached with fairness, consistency, impartiality and respect for due process.”
Alfred explained that discipline is not just about dealing with misconduct.
“It also strengthens professionalism, reinforces the standards expected of our members, and ensures every officer understands the responsibility that comes with serving in the RSLPF,” he said, adding that policing is a two-way responsibility.
“While every member of the Force is expected to uphold the standards of conduct associated with policing, there is also a corresponding expectation that members of the public respect and uphold the law, particularly as officers carry out their duties in service to the community.”
Alfred said the Discipline Unit will ensure disciplinary matters are handled fairly, openly, and through proper procedures when dealing with any allegations or concerns.
He pointed out that every disciplinary case involves real people, their careers and the public’s trust in the police.
“The Unit therefore intends to discharge this responsibility with professionalism, objectivity and integrity. This approach will be guided by fairness and accountability, while ensuring the disciplinary process contributes to strengthening the organisation and the confidence the people of Saint Lucia place in their Police Force,” he said.
To help resolve outstanding cases, Alfred asked anyone with disciplinary matters before the RSLPF to contact the Discipline Unit at 456-4223 or disciplineunit12@gmail.com.
