CARICOM Chairman pays tribute to late President of French Guiana

Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre has paid tribute to the late President of French Guiana, Gabriel Serville, who passed away on Wednesday from complications arising from cancer treatment.

The Prime Minister, who also serves as CARICOM Chairman, expressed “profound sadness” and heartfelt condolences on behalf of the government and people of Saint Lucia.

French Guiana became CARICOM’s eighth Associate Member during the 51st Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government held in Saint Lucia in July this year. At that meeting, Prime Minister Pierre assumed the chairmanship of the regional grouping.

According to Pierre, President Serville dedicated himself to the service of the people of French Guiana, whom he served with distinction.

“Throughout his tenure, he remained steadfast in his efforts to advance the development and well-being of French Guiana and its people. He was also instrumental in fostering closer relations between French Guiana and the Caribbean, as demonstrated through his efforts towards French Guiana’s accession to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) as an Associate Member in July 2026,” Pierre said in a statement.

“This historic milestone, which was formalised in Saint Lucia, stands as a testament to his dedication to strengthening regional cooperation and ties between French Guiana and the Caribbean,” he added.
