Halfway there: The teams to beat in schools’ football

The Schools’ Football competition at both the Under-19 and Under-15 levels continues to heat up, with the league now at its midway stage. Across all four groups, various statistical outliers are starting to emerge, showcasing trends among the different teams.

At the Under-15 level, the team to beat so far seems to be the Saint Lucia Sports Academy (SLSA). The Gros Islet-based institution has banged in 26 goals over its three fixtures, making it the most productive in front of the net in the competition. SLSA has also conceded only two goals, placing it as the second-best defensive unit. The team currently sits at the top of Group C.

The best defensive team at the Under-15 level so far has been the Group D table-topper, St Mary’s College. Through the midway stage of the tournament, the team has let in only one goal, having played three fixtures and won all three.

So far, for the Under-19s, Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary School has been the most successful team in terms of goal-scoring. The boys from Sulphur City have netted a stunning 22 times across the three games played, at an average of 7.33 goals per game. The team leads Group A and is among the tournament’s most dangerous outfits.

The stalwarts in defence for the Under-19s so far have been Castries Comprehensive Secondary School and St Mary’s College. Neither team has let in a goal for the tournament so far, although both have played only two games each. The two teams, both in Group D, are currently in a push to the finish that may go all the way down to the final matchday. Castries Comprehensive, who sit third in the group with a game in hand against second-placed Ciceron, are in a three-way tie on points with first-placed St Mary’s College and the aforementioned Castries South-based school.

Individual standouts at the Under-15 level include Shem Ismael from the Saint Lucia Sports Academy, who netted 10 goals; Jervon Charlery from Vieux Fort Comprehensive Secondary School, who scored four goals; and Liam Jn. Baptiste from Entrepot Secondary School, who also scored four goals.

For the Under-19s, Curdin Jones from Soufriere Comprehensive is the current top scorer with 10 goals, followed by Keenan Joseph from Sir Arthur Lewis Community College with six goals, and Keonte Derose from Beanfield Comprehensive with five goals.
