The Department of Labour has stepped into stalled wage talks between the National Workers Union and the Water and Sewerage Company Inc. after the two sides failed to agree on a proposed pay increase.
In a press release, the Department said it brought the parties together on October 27 following an impasse in negotiations, with Deputy Labour Commissioner Nicolai Lansiquot chairing the meeting.
According to the Department, the disagreement centres on a wage increase proposed by WASCO which the union has been unable to accept.
During the meeting, both sides were asked to consider factors including the cost of living, inflation, the value of the work being performed and WASCO’s ability to meet any increase while maintaining its financial and operational stability.
The Department said the aim is to strike a balance between workers’ expectations and the company’s financial realities.
It will now prepare recommendations for both parties as they continue efforts to reach an agreement.
