Harry Belafonte, singer, actor, and civil rights activist, died at 96 in his Manhattan home.
One of history’s most successful African-American pop stars, he scored hits with Island In The Sun, Mary’s Boy Child, and the UK number one Day-O (The Banana Boat Song).
Belafonte died with his wife, Pamela, at his side.
His spokesman, Ken Sunshine, disclosed that the son of poor Caribbean immigrants died of congestive heart failure.
Belafonte was married three times. He and his first wife, Marguerite Byrd, had two children, including actress-model Shari Belafonte.
He also had two children with his second wife, a former dancer, Julia Robinson.
