A Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) official has spoken of the need for teacher vigilance amid a rise in the use of Artificial Intelligence platforms like ChatGPT.
Dr. Margaret Niles manages the Research, Insights, and Product Innovation Department at the CXC.
She explained that the organisation accepts that ChatGPT is here and would evolve and improve.
However, Niles said the CXC does not fear the platform.
“We do understand that we now have to focus a lot on authentic assessment and our stakeholders, especially our teachers, would need now to be very vigilant,” the CXC official observed.
She was part of a panel discussion on Artificial Intelligence – Blessing or Curse for Higher Education?Â
Niles explained that Artificial Intelligence could assist students in writing School Based Assessments (SBAs).
However, she noted that the students should get training to use the technology ethically.
“As we develop the strategies and policies as we go through that will support the integration of ChatGPT across our syllabi and our curriculum, we do accept that there is a difference in the way we will approach assessment,” Niles stated.
But she also asserted that there would have to be a difference in the approach to teaching.
“We understand that ChatGPT is here with us. It is here to stay. And we will therefore make the necessary adjustments to our assessment procedures to accommodate that,” Niles disclosed.Â
ChatGPT is a natural language processing tool driven by Artificial Intelligence technology that allows a user to have human-like conversations and much more with the chatbot.
The language model can answer questions and assist with tasks such as composing emails and essays.
