Jamaicans have expressed shock over the death of an eight-year-old girl abducted from the Braeton Primary and Infant School in Portmore, St. Catherine, on Thursday and later found with severe injuries.
Danielle Rowe succumbed to her injuries on Saturday at Bustamante Hospital for Children.
Local media reports said Danielle’s throat had been slashed.
The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) said in a social media post that she was the daughter of a serving JCF member assigned to the St Catherine South Division.
“This heinous crime has shocked our nation, and the thoughts and deepest condolences of the entire JCF family go out to her family, friends, and school community during this incredibly difficult time,” the JCF said.
And the statement appealed to the public for help bringing justice to the ‘perpetrator(s) of this horrendous act.’
Prime Minister Andrew Holness described the youngster’s killing as ‘barbaric and deeply disturbing’.
“The entire Jamaica must consider this a charge on our collective conscience,” Holness declared in a statement, adding that his government would use all available legal tools to communicate that violence is unacceptable.
Opposition Leader Mark Golding described the child’s killing as ‘a despicable and depraved act of violence against this little girl.’
He said it indicated the extent to which the nation had failed to protect its children.
